General
search engines and interesting facts about search engines
These
search engines are not devoted to gay sites; they have a much larger
scope: the entire World Wide Web. A few of them actually have spidered
up to a third of all the sites available. This category will also link
to sites specializing in studying search engines, measuring their performances,
and pondering about their future...This section is new and many listings
will be added in the near future.
| Google |
Because
of its high relevancy results, Google has been retained to supply
results to a large number of other search engines. Google is at
this time the 4th most visited site on the Internet. |
| Yahoo! |
Originally,
a human reviewed directory, Yahoo! had to adapt and provide more
results than any directory, however large could supply. Currently
the top dog; Google is their main competitor. |
| MSN |
Another
big player. No idea how their database is built since they offer
only pay for placement options (that's Microsoft, after all). |
| Alexa |
Search
engine, powered by Google. Its most noticeable feature however is
its attempt at ranking major websites. The method they use is this:
they put a spy-cookie in your computer, compile the various urls
you visit, and extrapolate the results to the entire Web users.
For this to work, you first have to visit Alexa.com. Since not everybody
does that, Alexa's results are by nature biased, but in perspective,
their results are a reasonable approximation of what's going on.
Interestingly enough, they hide their own ranking. |
